What is a thermal printer?

What is a thermal printer? What is the difference between it and a regular printer? A thermal printer is a type of printer that uses a heated thermal print head pressed against media to produce black text or images. Depending on the type of thermal printer, the heated print head activates specially chemically treated paper (called thermal paper) or transfers solid ink from a ribbon and bonds it to the media. Thermal printers use heated print heads to produce images.

There are two types of thermal printers: direct thermal and thermal transfer. Both use a thermal print head to apply heat to the surface to be marked.

What can you do with a thermal printer?

Thermal printers will be more energy efficient, quieter, faster and easier to maintain than other ordinary printers. The moving parts are the paper and in some cases the ribbon. No calibration is required and maintenance requirements are minimal. Thermal printers apply pressure and heat directly to the print head and then directly to the paper surface. This treatment results in a clearer and more detailed final print that is suitable for printing fine details such as barcodes and shipping labels.

Typically, thermal printers are used to create labels, receipts, barcodes, ID cards, and many other applications in numerous industries.

For example, thermal printers would be used for printers that print grocery store receipts. The post office may use thermal printers to print labels. Warehouses often use thermal printers to print barcodes to identify products and quickly inventory stock.
